The Options

There are fundamentally 2 options:

• Rescue the business; or

• Close the business.

Careful consideration must be given to the question as to whether the business can realistically be rescued.

Can my business be rescued?

This will depend upon the stage of the company’s distress and how early you seek professional advice.  There are a number of key questions to address to establish whether liquidation/closure will be appropriate:

• Are there any remaining sources of finance?

• Can the business be successfully restructured within the available funding?

• Is the business realistically viable in the long term?

• Do you have good relationships with suppliers and customers?

• Do you have an appetite to take the business forward?

• Would you realistically be better off getting a paid job?

If the business cannot be resuced then liquidation may be appropriate - this and other alterantives are considered in the solutions section.
